February's Casting News

With Valentine's Day behind us, it's time to refocus on seducing casting directors with your talent. So let's get to it – here are February's top casting highlights.

🎥 1,046 projects in pre-production or development in the UK 🎥

It's been a little windy lately, hasn't it? And there are plenty of early-development productions kicking up a storm in the UK at the moment too. We reckon these are most likely to blow audiences away:

  • Hippie Hippie Shake – a drama revisiting London's countercultural movement from the 1960s. Expect a very flamboyant costume department. Jina Jay's handling the casting.

  • Hercules – the man, the myth, the legend, Hercules is set to return in yet another big project from Disney. This one's in early pre-production, with an A-lister team of writers and directors.

  • The Diplomat – with Netflix behind the production, this forthcoming series seems to be following in the footsteps of political comedies like Veep and The Thick of It. It'll be a strong, sharp script from writer Ben Richards.

  • Rio – Benedict Cumberbatch is among the producers for this forthcoming thriller, set on Brazil's picturesque beaches. The story sounds brilliant.

And here's a reminder of what we got all excited about last month:

  • Robin Hood (II) – very early rumblings of a forthcoming Robin Hood outing from Disney, now in development. This'll be a great one for actors with British accents.

  • Hurricane – named, we presume, after the WWII fighter plane, this is likely to be another all-British ensemble. Now in pre-production. Time to invest in some Brylcreem, gents.

  • Borderland – join John Boyega and Felicity Jones in this forthcoming thriller, in pre-production. Dan Jackson's handling the casting.

  • Treason – this has all the trappings of a very good spy drama – a TV series based around the relationship between an MI6 agent and a Russian spy. Early days, but worth keeping an eye on.

There's lot of action on Twitter at the moment, where we'd highly recommend you begin following the UK's leading casting directors. Here are just some of the highlights we've plucked out this month.

A lovely opportunity for eligible performers who can hit their high notes here from Daniel Edwards-Guy:

Isabella Odoffin's looking for a young man with a South London accent – we reckon there's plenty of you out there who could give this a shot:

Are you a man-mountain? You might be just who Lauren Evans is looking for:

Only a couple of days left to get in touch with Kate Bone on this one:

No acting experience required for this exciting project, shared by Kharmel Cochrane:

We love an indie film. Here's Rebecca Wright on a nice little opportunity for people based around Liverpool and the Wirral:

📙 Last month in FlairBox Magazine 📙

January was a bumper month for FlairBox Magazine, featuring a deep-dive into Korea's recent boom in brilliant TV and film and, following on from our piece debunking method acting, an article on where else actors disagree over method and theory.

Earlier this month, John Williams turned 90. Here's why the man behind cinema's most sensational scores is in a league of his own. And Uncharted has hit UK cinemas – have you seen it? Before the film's release, we took a look back at the history of video game adaptations to see whether Uncharted would be a hit or a flop.

That's all for this month. Keep safe and out of the wind, and we'll be back with a casting update in the hopefully warmer middle of March.
